Live Butterfly Garden
Did you know that painted ladies (the butterflies, that is) taste with their feet and have 10,000 eyes? You and your kids will be fascinated by all you learn about these beautiful creatures with the Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore. The kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars. The metamorphosis from larva to butterfly takes about three weeks from when you receive the caterpillar larvae (which arrive in a small container with all the nutrients they need). Your children can watch the larvae increase dramatically in size, form chrysalides, and finally emerge into full-fledged painted ladies (it’s suggested that they release the butterflies after a few days of observation). This would make a wonderful activity for families with kids of any age, but younger children will need help assembling the observation chamber and reading the instruction booklet. 1 Star No Larvae yet – NO online ordering, phone wait 30+ minutes
I am anicipating my kids enjoying this someday when they get the needed larvae. You CANNOT order the larvae online despite them saying you can. Try their insectlore.com/coupon/ and you will see (maybe it will be fixed when you check which would be great but for the last month, never). The site just tells you to call because they are having problems (for 30 days – that is not technical difficulties that is NOT having web access). I kept waiting and checking each day presuming they would fix it – NO. Then I called the number (NOT a toll free number) and was told the wait would be in excess of 30 minutes. So I guess I will mail it eventually – come on company, this is 2009 so at least your phones should work.
One star because when you buy something requiring the subsequent order then you 100% should expect the ordering system to work. Based on other reviews, the thing itself may be very nice once we manage to get it.
5 Stars Wonderful fun for young and old!!!!!!
We received our catepillars in a timely manner (about 2 weeks). We received 5 catepillars. 4/5 made a cocoon. However, only one attached to the top of the container, so we had to move the oters by picking them up and transferring them into the butterfly home. I really did not think they would survive the move, as they were wiggling all about, but one hatched, and today we heard something, and sure enough we watched the cocoon turn into a butterfly. There is still one cocoon sitting on the bottom, and the one that DID attach and is hanging has still not “hatched”. This has been one of the best purchases I have ever made on amazon. We will be ordering more catepilllars soon!

This thing was fantastic. The caterpillars come in a clear plastic container which allows you to see everything! I think I almost loved the things more than my kids! AWESOME!
5 Stars butterfly garden
I have purchased many Butterfly Gardens during the last 15 years, always this brand. They have all been successful. They make wonderful gifts for my grandchilden (of which I have 22!). We also use the larger Butterfly Gardens in our school with our kindergarden classes–again with success. They are a source of wonder bringing in the world of nature up close and personal. They become the pages of the chidren’s journals and the inspiration for their artwork. I love this product.
